Reducing food waste is a key element to a sustainable lifestyle. Luckily, there are many great ways to get the most out of your fresh products.
  • Storing Food Properly:
    • Peak freshness and flavor are in every bite of California Giant Berry Farms’ berries. To maintain this top-quality taste for as long as possible, learn how to properly store fresh products. Read more about storing fresh berries in our blog, The Buzz.
    • When possible, try to avoid single-use plastics that end up in a landfill. Bring your own produce bags and shopping totes to the store with you and consider buying larger bulk items, instead of single serve.
  • Using and Preserving Excess Food:
    • There are many recipes and uses for excess and overripe produce. Consider freezing fresh produce for later use, making a pie or jam out of overripe fruit, or muddling soft berries to use in cocktails and mocktails. Check out our recipes for other great ideas!

Sustainable Home

  • Some cleaning products include chemicals that are harmful to the environment, your health, and even your pet’s health. Look for products that have EPA’s Safer Choice and DFE labels and avoid products with caution labels or warnings as they likely contain harmful ingredients.
  • White vinegar diluted with water is a great multi-purpose, non-toxic cleaning agent that you can mix at home.

Composting is an environmentally friendly way to repurpose food scraps and create a healthy soil mix for your plants and garden – a win, win!

What to Compost: From newspapers to coffee grounds, many everyday items are compost friendly! Find a comprehensive list here from The Spruce and be sure to mix in these key ingredients:

  • Just like your food plate, a mix of color is important to your compost bin.
  • Water! Liquid is important breaking down organic matter. Be sure to only moisten your compost, not soak.
  • Patience is the final key to a great compost pile. Every few weeks, be sure to aerate your pile by turning and mixing up your compost.

What NOT to Compost: To avoid harmful substances and pests in your compost, here are a few examples of what not to plop in your bin:

compost bin
  • Stickers (found on produce and  otherwise)
  • Plants that died from disease or have been treated with chemicals
  • Pet wastes
  • Dairy products
  • Coal or charcoal
  • Colored paper
  • Meat products
  • Leather
  • Diapers
  • Plastic
  • Black walnut

Sustainable Style

  • Instead of throwing away old clothes, which can stay in landfills for years, consider donating them to a local non-profit organization, thrift store or sell them online!
  • Reduce your carbon footprint by thrifting “new to you” clothes. Online marketplaces, such as Thredup, are a great resource for finding gently used clothing and accessories that practice the “reuse” part of an item’s recycling lifecycle.
  • When purchasing brand new clothes, research companies and buy from brands that are taking actionable steps towards protecting the environment and reducing their carbon footprint. Look on their websites for:
    • Fair Trade Certification
    • Global Organic Textiles Standard Certification
    • Callouts of using reused or recycled materials
    • Responsible sourcing of materials

  • Reuse and upcycle your original home decor with fun YouTube hacks like this one!
  • Buying furniture is an investment. Before making a large purchase, research the manufacturer and brand, looking for:
    • Repurposed or recycled materials
    • Fair Trade manufacturing practices which do no harm to communities or the environment
    • Cradle to Cradle certification: This shows the environmental impact has been considered in a product’s design and can be found on goods ranging from furniture to flooring.
